I've been asked by my boss to 'overhaul reporting services, come up with a new strategy and make our reports awesome'.

So i've been looking into dashboards, Dundas charts and things to generally give our reporting facility a kick up the bum. Trouble is i'm running out of ideas.

Dundas charts and dials look pretty good but a pie chart's still a pie chart - even if it has a shadow and whilst some people may be impressed by the new look these might give, it doesn't really change anything.

Dashboards i'm very interested in but all the things i've read say I need Sharepoint running and we're not up to that yet in our place. We have it but aren't ready to roll it out to the users so that's no help. In any case I can't really see the difference between a Sharepoint 'Dashboard' and a SQL report with a number of charts on it. Perhaps I just don't get it.

So i'd welcome your opinions on these things plus any other ways I can smarten up my reports both individually and as a global process affecting all our reports. The SQL Reports portal is beginning to look a bit 'tired' and it needs the kiss of life. What do you reckon chaps?

Sounds like the premise of a Dilbert cartoon.
