Hello,

We have several SQL 2005 servers in an NT4 domain that is being upgraded to Windows 2003 AD domain. Authentication mode is mixed, SQL service account is a domain account. Production application access to most databases also uses a few domain accounts.

Initial W2K3 domain functional level will be 'Windows 2003 Interim' for a while, and new domain controllers will be running as NT4 Emulators. Eventually it will be raised to 'Windows 2003' level and NT4 Emulation removed.

My questions are:

- Can the upgrade affect SQL 2005 servers in any way, and if anything needs to be done on them before/during/after the domain upgrade?
- Any concerns/changes that are needed for when the domain functional level is raised to Windows 2003?

Thanks!

1. Sure it can be affect you, but it shouldn't if they do things properly. We've upgraded the OS on the DC's in the past without even noticing anything on the SQL side. I've been at my company 9 years, and they've upgraded twice in a mission critical domain (from 2000 to 2003 and then 2003 to 2008) and we didn't even realize it until weeks after the work had been completed. It was transparent to the database servers. Why aren't they upgrading to 2008? 2003 is soooo old at this point, although any upgrade from NT4 will be an improvement.
2. No.

Tara, thanks for replying right away!

Eventually it will be upgraded to 2008, 2003 is the first step...

Going from NT4 to any W2x is a big change (at least with NTLM to Kerberos, and SAM to AD), not sure if SQL may complain in any way, if authentication methods may possibly need to be changed or any other settings, etc.

Thanks again!

When we went from NT4 to Win2k about 10 years ago, I don't recall any problems. But that was a very long time ago, and my memory isn't that great. I've never made the jump from NT4 to Win2k3.
