I receive the error message listed below when trying to log into the management console using Windows Authentication. I have searched the forum and have not been able to find anything associated with this error. Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.

Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.SmoEnum, Version=9.0.242.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKey Token=89845dcd8080cc91' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not mathe the assembly reference (Exception from HRESULT: 0c80131040) (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ObjectExplorer)

Thanks

Try installing SP4 for SQL 2005 as it sounds like you've got a corrupt client tool file. Or reinstall the client tools.

Tara,
Will your suggestion apply to the 2005 SQL Server Express version? Also, will there be any issue with installing SP4 over an existing SP4 install? Finally I am trying to log into "SQL Server Management Studio Express" if that make any difference.
Thanks,
Nick

Yes it applies to Express edition. While it is perfectly fine to reinstall a service pack, I cannot tell you that you won't run into any issues. You've got corrupt files, so perhaps you'll encounter problems. Perhaps not though.

Tara,

What should I do to protect my data prior to performing the reinstall?

Make sure you have good backups. Good backups doesn't just mean that that the backup command ran successfully, it also means that they are restorable.

But installing SP4 is safe.

Hello Again Tara,

Please excuse the long delays in my questions. I do not get to the office that has this issue very often. My reason for the original question had to do with accomplishing the backup process. Since I can not log into the console, I am unable to perform the backup. Is there another method to complete the backup?

Thanks,

Nick

You do not have to login to the console to perform a backup. You can use a client tool from a remote computer. For Express, you can use Management Studio Express (GUI tool, T-SQL tool) or sqlcmd.exe (command line tool).
