| Hi there,Apologies folks if I've put this thread in the wrong forumI just wanted to ask advice. I know it depends on a lot of things but what would you say is a good amount of years experience for someone in IT? 3-5 years? What would be considered senior experience?I've applied for a new job and have 4 years experience working with SQL Server and 3 years with SSRS but have been told I'm at junior stage for a DBA/Developer/BI from the description of what I've done? Could this mean that I'm junior for that type of role?I would be grateful to hear any thoughts on this and maybe some examples of what would be above junior experience.Thanks |

| IMOSenior: 15+ yearsIntermediate: 5-10Junior: 3-6Learning: <3 Some overlaps/gaps above naturally. Elapsed time also isn't necessarily the only thing to factor in to determining the description - often it is the scale, complexity and breath of the types of work you have actioned (and more importantly directed/designed/led) |

| Hmmm, that means I'm somewhere between Intermediate and Senior (13 years). I would've thought gray hair grants "senior" status, I've certainly got that! Now to get Red Lobster to give me that discount... |

From the resumes that I get, a lot of people think senior means you finished reading "SQL Server in 21 Days".  I don't think of DBA as a job you start with, but something you move into after gaining significant experience (5+ years) in development, system administration, etc. After that, 5 to 10 years before I think of them as a senior DBA.CODO ERGO SUM |

I disagree, but it really depends on how much of a learner you are. I was a junior DBA for 2 years. Intermediate after that. I hit the senior title somewhere around 7 years, although I was operating at that level since year 5 or so. I'm now at Staff level, which is one level above senior. I hit that 2 years ago. Next is Senior Staff. We have what's called Staff level after Senior. And then we have Senior Staff. So we have two levels above senior for the DBAs.I've been in IT full-time for 12 years. I wish there was a like button..I get people who think they are senior who can't even tune a query and are scared of profiler..  |

| Well, there a lot of such self proclamed gurus on the internet. I remember one operating on IT Toolbox. He continued persuaded everyone that db autoshrinking is a good thing and giving opinions about query optimization using buzzwords. | I have about 11+ years of working with SQL Server and I started directly with SQL 2000. In my role I go onsite to customers and when they introduce me to their team as "SQL expert" I kind of cringe.. the product is changing so much with every release its hard to keep up with the new stuff. I just say, I know what I know and I know what I dont know..
