Hi folks, I've just started a student work placement working for a charity in England. I'm a university student and the mandatory 3rd year of my course is a placement in industry. One of the tasks I have been set is to transfer data from excel documents to the microsoft sql server. I have done some googling about the possibilities of using data stored in an sql table to create simple graphs, however I havent found anything useful. I am assuming (maybe a little rashly) that this functionality must exist, because all it involves is basic extraction of values from a field and assigning them to x and y axes..

Yes - several ways.Excel and reporting services are two common products used. You are already using excel - have a look at the graphing facilities provided.==========================================Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.SSIS can be used in a similar way.Beer is not cold and it isn't fizzy.

Thanks for your response. I should have mentioned that a preferred (but optional) aspect of the graph is for it to dynamically update with each user input. It occurred to me that since data is going to be entered and extracted using php I can possibly also use php to create the graph..?

You will need something to refresh the graph triggered by an update. This can be done by sending a message to the client to execute the refresh - you need to be careful about delays so that a refresh doesn't get missed due to the previous one executing. It's usually implemented by polling the system and a periodic refresh from the client. The graph is a client object so it needs to be created by whatever you use for clients. I would go for .net but if you are expert in php then that would be best - but if that's the case you should know about this already.==========================================Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.SSIS can be used in a similar way.Beer is not cold and it isn't fizzy.
