| HI ALL, I maintain a huge and fast-growing data to hold all our images/photos. Drive volume is 5.5 TB and 1.5 TB free space. Now I have an issue - whenever i shrink/backup the database, the LUN goes offline. Every time i have to ask our network guy to make it online. Does anybody know why this happened and how to fix it? thanks, Alex |

| what are the steps you are following?On a similar note, you should NEVER shrink data files. Shrinking causes fragmentation and is almost guaranteed to affect performance. why do you need to shrink?Dinakar Nethi************************Life is short. Thanks for your reply!In Enterprise Manager, I checked the database files and saw the Current size is much bigger than the Space used so I think I should shrink the database. Please explain why I should never shrink the data files - I have to say I am not a DBA. Scheduled database backups and loading more photos/images also made the LUN goes offline. Appreciate if you can provide some help. quote:

| I'm betting you're filling the volume, causing it to go offline. Having this happen repeatedly may well eventually corrupt the database(s) on that volume.Have your Network Admin check/monitor this, and probably extend the volume. |

But it has enough free space (1.5TB). The LUN goes offline even when I tried to load 200GB images/photos. quote:

| Your SAN/Network admin needs to fix this. I've only seen this happen when volume filled up. Fixed by extending the volume.Also, make sure any SAN tools that dynamically reorganize volumes is turned off. This isn't uncommon when thin provisioning volumes, but isn't acceptable for database servers or exchange servers (works great for file servers). |
