I understand how to code a program to access a SQL Server database/table, but I do not know what is needed to set-up the database to allow access via a program. Would anyone have any knowledge you can share with me regarding what is needed to be set-up in regards to the connection between the database and an application program?

Anytime I have written a program to access (read and update privileges) this connectivity has already been set-up.

Any references or advice is greatly appreciated.

thanks!

I'm confused what you are asking. Are you talking about the application's connection string?

Yes you do. What access you'll need is dependent upon what the application is doing. We require all data access to be through stored procedures, so we just grant our user EXEC on those stored procedures.

so if the access needs to have read/write and the user is a .net program - does this type of user get set-up differently inSQL Server 2005? If so, what is the difference and what would I need to be aware of...?

Will the data access be through stored procedures? Or no? We need to know that answer first.
