Hello all,

I am a 31 year old British guy living in Taiwan who is fed up of teaching English and considering taking up DBA as a career. I run and manage a number of community forums but haven't really got into databases too far beyond Microsoft access when I was doing my computer diploma some 12 years ago!

Why DBA? my research suggests its a pretty secure career to get into but first things first! can I just jump right into learning SQL? I do not really have any background programming knowledge unless HTML counts?! does this exclude me? I am pretty weak at math, does this make learning SQL a foolish choice? where to start?

Helpful replies welcome!

Yes. Set theory would help though

>> I do not really have any background programming know
For relational processing not an issue - may be an advantage.

>> I am pretty weak at math, does this make learning SQL a foolish choice
Nope - a general handicap but not specific to database work.

How do you expect to get work as a DBA?
One reason it looks secure is that it takes a long time to become experienced and a lot of people aren't that good. Until you have the experience and ability companies aren't that interested.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
SSIS can be used in a similar way.

Thank you Nigel. On that note it might be better to explore other options....any suggestions?

Go for what interests you - hopefully a career will follow.

You are teaching at the moment so maybe something to do with training would be an obvious move?
I met someone who went into database training for a few years and on the back of that got a technical role. He quickly got sacked a few times but eventually learned the job.
