I've got 2008 SBS prem running as the DC and the SQL server. I'd like to move the SQL role off the SBS 2008 Server and onto a Windows 7 Pro computer running 16Gb of RAM to act as the SQL Server.

1) can I install the SQL2008 that comes with SBS 2008 Prem on a windows 7 PC?
2) how does the licensing work? Do I first have to uninstall SQL from the 2008 SBS server before installing it onto the windows 7 PC ?

Thanks!

What edition of SQL Server are you using? Unless it's express edition, it'll need to go on a server operating system, preferably Windows 2008 R2.

You don't have to first uninstall it from the DC to avoid licensing conflicts. It isn't rigid like that.

Thanks!

The SQL edition is the one that comes with SBS2008 Premium..."SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition for Small Business"

You can't put that on Windows 7.

It would also be a violation of your licensing agreement I think.
