| I have a database that was output from SQL Server 6.5 and it's a .DAT file. I would like (love) to be able to convert it to Excel, csv or some readable format.Tom Mc Carrick |

| You will probably be able to find a Trial version to install, and restore to. I'm pretty sure the "Express" version will do - which will run on a standalone PC.If you use SQL 2000 (edit: With service pack 4 applied) you can THEN take a backup of the database which will restore under SQL 2005 or SQL 2008. (Note that if you use SQL7 you will be able to restore to SQL2005, but not SQL 2008) |

MSDE (as I think it was called) abounded all over the place for developers to create stand-alone apps, so I doubt you'll have a problem finding one.I very VERY much doubt there is any other route to reading a backup file (if that is what you have) from SQL 6.5. |

| MSDN is quite expensive, but there are other Developer subscriptions which are very reasonable (I subscribe to "Action pack"). Depends what you need - MSDN [from memory, I let my MSDN subscription lapse some years ago] gets you every single platform that Microsoft produce.There is also, separately, a SQL Developers license you can buy. That gets you the Enterprise Licence for a very modest amount - only restriction is that you cannot use it to deploy an application, so ideal for development.Microsoft would like developers to build software without having to spend their life's savings on developer tools ... it is the applications that sell Computers and End User Licences of course ... |
