SQL Timeout Exceptions - Causes?

SQL Server 2008 RS and Windows Webserver 2008 R2. 5 GB or Ram.

I am receiving a lot of SQL timeout exceptions. I've checked my asp.net code and its fine. Connections closed properly. It occurs randomly and on different pages. What else could be the problem? Can you tell anything from the below message?

Timeouts are set at a client end. You might want to increase your timeout setting in the connectionstring.

Although increasing the timeout could work it would be far better to look at the root cause of the problem which is probably locking in the database, which in turn is usually caused by poor query performance.

You should identify the queries that are causing timeouts and start performance tuning them. Ask questions on this forum about how to optimize each query.

Alternatively, start a Profiler trace to find the longest running queries you have and start optimizing them. Follow this tutorial to set up a trace template -> http://thefirstsql.com/2011/01/07/sql-server-profiler-a-tutorial/. Then start a new trace that filters out any queries that takes less than one second (1000 milliseconds) and work your way through the list of long running queries.
