| I hope I can describe this properly. At my workplace, we have a workgroup, not a network. Out data is on a server in Chicago which I can log onto with Remote Desktop Connection. Our contractors enter their time via the internet to the server. I do reporting with the data. However, I can't connect to the database directly - I have to copy data down to my PC, import it to Access and report off the Access DB. I use Crystal Reports as my main reporting tool. I have SQL server Mgmt Studio 2008 on my local machine which has been useless to me since there is no database to connect to. So, I have 2 questions.1. Does anyone know if there is a way to take a backup of the DB (which I can easily copy to my local machine) and somehow open it in the SQL Mgmt studio on my local machine ??2. Also, is there a way for me to access the remote server from my local machine ?I hope my questions make sense. Thanks in advance |

| 1. you take backup from the actual server which will be a .bak file. then copy file to your local machine and then connect to local server using sql management studio and restore db from .bak file.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------SQL Server MVPhttp://visakhm.blogspot.com/ |

| thank you for the reply. However, I'm still stuck. How do I connect to a local server, if there is no local server ? I'm not sure I follow. We have a share drive - that drive resides on a computer on the workgroup - would that be a local server ? |

local server exists if you've installed sql server in your local machine. to check that run services.msc from start->run and then check if it has sql server service listed------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------SQL Server MVPhttp://visakhm.blogspot.com/ |

| Now I have to figure out how to connect to this local backup with Crystal reports. In past jobs, I just set up an ODBC connection to the server, but so far I can't find the DB. Please let me know if anyone has a suggestion for this part. |

Not sure that will work in OPs case as local machine is in a work group so unless remote sql server is open to internet I doubt ability of connecting like above------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------SQL Server MVPhttp://visakhm.blogspot.com/ |
