In SQL Server 2K it's easy, just use this stored procedures.
sp_dropserver 'old_server_name'
sp_addserver 'new_server_name'

In SQL Server 7 you need one more step, after you change the server name and reboot SQL server will complain...not able to start and so on.

Run setup, this will tell you that setup is going to upgrade your system and this will change the registry.Reboot once again and with QA use the 2 strored procedures.

After this step delete server registration in EM then reregister.

Nazim, after you rename the machine, SQL Server usually refuses to start up. I guess using the IP address hardly helps

What version of SQL? In 7.0 it will tell you to rerun setup, which is what you need to do to fix it. (Then run sp_dropserver and sp_addserver).

I have run across one other problem with name server changes when using SQL 2000. If you have any jobs defined in the SQL Server Agent, you can no longer edit them because the originating_server field in the sysjobs table still has the old server name listed. In the past I have had to allow updates to the system tables and change the name in this field to reflect the new server name.
