Yes, Books Online has great information on those functions. Have you tried there?

I hadn't, I've typically found BOL articles to be somewhat clunky as all my learning style requires is a practical 'How to' guide, but at your suggestion I took a look. I'd still like a tutorial in it but the examples are worth looking at.
