Can anyone suggest me a good book for a rookie to start learning sql server programming with lots of examples using for-loops/case statements/while conditions etcetera. This forum is extremly useful , but i am loss if i start to understand what everyone is asking and what the solutios are. I think the posts here are more self centered for issues people have. So i would like to satrt understanding and begin from scratch and work my way up. though late ...:-) It does not matter if it going to take me 6-8 months.

Two of my favorite beginner level books are:

1. Itzik Ben-Gan's T-SQL fundamentals. http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft%C2%AE-Server%C2%AE-T-SQL-Fundamentals-PRO-Developer/dp/0735626014/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_1 I am sort of biased because I have been always impressed by his books, especially the advanced ones.

2. Robert Vieira's book http://www.amazon.com/Beginning-Microsoft-Server-Programming-Programmer/dp/0470257016/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1330794389&sr=1-2

BTW, one of the things you will learn is to do things that one would normally think of doing via for loops using set-based queries. Discovering that was one of those "aha!" moments for me.

Anyway, good luck, and I hope you have fun learning SQL.

Beware that the above books quoted are specifically for learning TSQL and not ANSI SQL.The SQL which you will learn if you refer to those books will be quite different to PL/SQL or MySQL.
