| Hi, All!Microsoft provides failover clustering as a feature of the SQL2k Enterprise Edition... However, there are tools out there (such as SQL-UP! by Incepto) that claim to provide clustering for Standard Edition... I was wondering if anyone here has ever used those tools and could share the experiences (especially with regards to reliability, managebility and cost).Edited by - izaltsman on 06/03/2003 18:31:14 |

| But if reliability (and availability most importantly) is what your company needs, then why not use SQL2k Enterprise Edition? I understand that cost is probably the reason, but shouldn't reliability outweigh cost issues?TaraEdited by - tduggan on 06/03/2003 18:52:51 |

| Well, I agree with you to some extent, but I'm working for a fairly small company and my budget is pretty tight. Besides, SQL-UP! has some features that aren't available with Enterprise Edition cluster... In any event, at this point I am just exploring my options and I want to see what people think about various clustering solutions.Edited by - izaltsman on 06/04/2003 09:37:47 |

| I'm not sure if log shipping is available in Standard edition, but if it is you might look into that for failover. Keeps your failover server up to date within a few minutes of the production server, and a lot simpler than clustering. |

| We actually do log shipping and failover clustering. We have a requirement for being "highly available", so we have a lot of redundancy (hardware, disaster recovery site, etc...).Tara |

Already did... Seems to be working pretty well too... And I'll probably keep it in place even after I implement a cluster. Main problem with log shipping though is the fact that I can not completely automate the failover process. |

This sounds interesting. Is there anyway you can post some of your code?-ec |
