Is there a programming "environment" for SQL that is similar to an older style Basic language compiler? Except for Oracle (which we don't have), and MS Access coding, I haven't been able to find anything. I am coming from a background where I would telnet into a Unix box that had a 1970's BusinessBasic system running on it. When I logged in, I could run programs I had written before, or just type NEW at the "#" prompt, then enter a program like

5 BUILD #1 "FILENAME"
10 LET A=10
20 PRINT A USING "##"
30 INPUT ""B$
SAVE "PROGRAM_NAME"
RUN

etc. I would like to find an environment similar to this. I am aware of WAMP, but that seems to be about creating PHP webpages and web DB work. Any ideas? Thank you
Mike

The SQLCMD utility is installed with the SQL Server desktop utilities. You can find more information about it here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms162773.aspx

I'm not sure if it fits the bill, but maybe take a look at PowerShell.?.?

I have to ask: why stay in the 70's when it's 2012?

LOL! I am the sole IT for a small city, and my boss initally programmed the computer system with a time-share computer service he ran in the 1980's, called IRIS. Well, I was hired way back when because I knew this language, and because he didn't want to change! It has been 28 years, and he is retiring THIS MONTH! I've played around with SQL on my own, but can't wait to move into a new century as well! That's why I'm looking for a simple desktop solution so I can run quick programs for database sorts, calculations, etc. - not really reports. Thanks!
