Can you help me with this?
Setup failed to perform required operations on the clustered nodes" - SP4 install on failover node

I added two new nodes to our existing Windows 2003 Enterprise SQL2000 Cluster with the setup in advance mode selecting to maintain cluster failover option. They added ok and are in all the cluster resources as owners. When I try to apply SP4 on the new node I get this message. Setup failed to perform required operations on the clustered nodes" - SP4 install on failover node

The original nodes both have SP4 on them.

I first had this error and applied the hotfix.. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905286
I was then able to continue.
Then I tried applying SP4 after applying this hotfix.. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914839
I still cannot apply SP4. Setup still fails.

Please reply to me by email.. stegib@stcroixcasino.com

Its at the default location where SQL Binaries are installed.Something like this for SQL Server 2008R2

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log.

Also you might want to check C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log and then in the most recent folder there's a Detail.txt file.

You can search for "error" and\or "warning" for the exact error.

I think this where the error is

Remote process exit code was '-12' (TLC-OASIS2).

Found a KB for the same.

Also log into the nodes under domain admin account and then try running the set up.

Well make sure no one is logged into the other node, and I mean no one, not even you. And make sure that you are the only one logged into the current node.

Just be logged off the nodes that need to have SP4 installed? That is tlc-oasis2. I need to update tlc-oasis1 and tlc-oasis2. The original nodes in the cluster both have SP4 installed. Or should I completely log off from all cluster nodes and apply SP4 on one of the nodes then log off that one and then apply to the other? How will it effect the Virtual SQL server that is running on the active node that already has SP4 installed?

Yes you need to logoff the other node while applying it on the first node. No one can be logged into the cluster but you on a single node.

The other instance will not be impacted, assuming it's on the other node.

My two original nodes are active passive.. Tlc-oasissrv1 and tlc-oasissrv2.. these both have SP4 on them.. The new ones are tlc-oasis1 and tlc-oasis2 with NO SP4 installed on them. So you are saying log off ALL nodes then try the setup again on one of the new ones then the other new one. This will just update the binaries on the new nodes correct and do nothing to the virtual SQL server? Or just log off on the new nodes? The error message on the setup logs only show the new nodes.

Why is setup failing? Authentication? I am using a Domain Admin account.

Yes I did but it mostly applies the the SQL setup on newly added cluster servers. That process went find,, just having problems with SP4 on the new nodes. I know I can not fail over to them unless they have SP4 installed on them because the original servers have it already. Clusters and Networks I understand but this SQL stuff I am such a newbie and trying to understand it. I know some things but I am having problems understanding why such an easy operation is failing. The only thing that keeps coming to my mind is a permission thing. I use a Domain Admin account to log into the servers with Dameware.

Well you can failover to the other node without installing SP4. I've got an issue on one of my clusters where one node has the service pack and the other doesn't. Been meaning to fix it, just haven't found the time to call Microsoft.

And with 2008, you patch the passive node to avoid downtime. Then do the failover, then patch the new passive node.

I'd suggest opening a case with Microsoft to resolve the issue. I'm constantly having to do that for SQL installations (base installation, service packs, hotfixes, you name it).

Backup Registry before any changes are made.. Here is the fix that worked for me with a Microsoft call.

Check nslookup on both new nodes to Virtual SQL Server Instance. Ok
Ping Virtual Server Instance on both new nodes. Ok
Check registry key: local machine / software / Microsoft / non-driver-signing policy = 00
On both new nodes that SP4 failed. Check registry key: local machine / software / Microsoft / Microsoft SQL Server / 80 .. if Need_sp_Key is there rename key on one node and start the install of SP4 on other node / reboot.
After successful install go back to the node that you renamed the key and rename it back to its original name / start the SP4 install, reboot server. Check the registry on both new nodes and the key need-sp_key should be gone. That key will not be on the active / passive nodes.
Now check the SQL build on all Nodes.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Binn
Sqlservr.exe and sqlagent.exe
Build needs to be the same on all nodes. If not then download the hotfix and apply to the Active node which will update all nodes to current level. After install you will need to reboot all nodes.

SQL2000-KB916287-v8.00.2187-x86x64-ENU.exe

No need to be logged off any node during installation. You can be logged into all nodes.
