For the life of me I can not get the Northwinds to work on 2012. I downloaded 2008 express and followed the instructions on this page. But , I have no management studio for 2008? Only 2012. So I can't get past the first step for "Converting the Northwind database file for Visual Studio 2012 RC". How can I get this to work?Cheers Dave

Which page are you referring to? Which example are you using? Northwinds was retired after SQL Server 2005 came out, AdventureWorks is the standard example database for SQL Server now. You can restore a backup of the Northwinds database to a 2005 or 2008 SQL Server instance, and possibly even 2012, but its compatibility level may cause problems.

Sorry, forgot the link. My brains hurts right now.http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8b6y4c7s(v=vs.110).aspxAnd why I want to use the northwinds DB is b/c of this walkthrough.http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa581778.aspxBut, if another DB can be used I don't mind, anything that will allow me to get familiar with ASP.netCheers Dave

I successfully created Northwind on a SQL 2012 instance by running the instnwnd.sql script included in the package. If you get an error running the script:1. Create a empty database named Northwind2. Open the instnwnd.sql in Management Studio3. Delete the code up to the first instance of "set quoted_identifier on" (line 28)4. Run the rest of the scriptThe 2 sp_dboption settings just before "set quoted_identifier on" are not valid in SQL Server 2012. The equivalent setting is Simple recovery mode, which you can set through Management Studio or with ALTER DATABASE.

I did as you said. Created a new database call "Northwind" and clicked execute. But, I get and error saying Northwind does not exist along with other errors. Is that what is supposed to happen?

Try the numbered directions I listed. Make sure the statement "USE Northwind" is in the script. If you still get errors please post them.

Hey Rob,I figured out that I was creating a new project not new database. So that was why I was getting the "Database not found" error. I have run it successfully and received a head of these errors."(1 row(s) affected)"How do I run recovery mode? Or am I good to go?BTW, thanks for the help thus far. |

ALTER DATABASE Northwind SET RECOVERY SIMPLE"1 rows affected" isn't an error. Look in the output for something like "Msg" with a number after it. If you don't see those it ran successfully.
