We created a new windows user with a login of : mwhitley

After the user was created they realized the login name was incorrect so they renamed it to: mwhitely

When I go into SQL to add that user it is still seeing mwhitley. Is there some process that can be ran to get SQL to see the new renamed user?

It sounds like you mean add a new SQL Server Logon but as a Windows User. In that case create a new logon using the CREATE LOGIN syntax for the new mwhitely
