I don't think there's an upgrade path from Express to Developer, but I could be wrong there. I think it's just a normal side-by-side installation and then move your stuff over.

Regarding a license key, you'll need to purchase a license from Microsoft or a reseller.

Hi Tara

Thanks, that makes sense. I have no data that need to be transferred.

Are there any precautions I have to be aware of if I use "Uninstall program" first? And then install SQL Developer later? I notice that there are a bunch of SQL-related programs when I look in control panel.

And, are there any reason for me to keep SQL 2008 anymore?

Kind regards
Espen

Precautions, not really. You could just install a new instance and leave Express there if you'd like. I generally don't uninstall instances on my desktop in case I need it later.

Whether or not you need to keep it isn't something I can answer for you. I have both 2008 and 2012 installed on my desktop. I might even have 2005 here.

Well then I'll just leave them there until I know what is going on and how it works. Right now there is nothing that makes sense, but I guess that will come after a while. :-)

Thank you for making this a bit clearer.

Kind regards

One of the things to be aware of is that BIDS is not backward compatible. If you have a 2005 server that is running SSIS or SSRS and need to modify the packages or reports - you have to use the 2005 version of BIDS.

I know the 2008 R2 version of BIDS is backward compatible with 2008 - but not 2005.

I have not had a chance to look at 2012 BIDS yet, which might be backward compatible - but I doubt it.
