I've been employed as a Network Admin for about 9 years and have SQL 2000 certs. I want to brush up on SQL administration (I'm rusty) and become a database admin. My goal is to have a new job as said database admin within a year. Which version of SQL Server should I certify in, 2008 or 2012? I have LOTS on training tools for SQL Server 2005...will that stuff be of any use in passing any of the tests for the newer versions?

I would say current scenario sql 2012 would be better. Because going for sql 2008 now would still require you to upgrade them at a later point

The material you know from SQL Server 2005 , will help greatly in progressing with the certification. Even though there are changes, many of the concepts remain the same

Thanks guys, very helpful. I'm going to start by getting the MCSA: SQL Server 2012. Currently studying for the 70-462 test, other two tests soon after. After I achieve this, I will go for the MCSE. I have some SQL and a lot of networking experience but I don't want to get in over my head, so after my MCSA, is it advisable to only seek junior DBA positions for the time being? How proficient should I be as a DBA after merely the MCSA?

Thanks!

As well as the certification , focus on getting as much hands on experience - which is critical. Aim to get a job working with some experienced DBAs. Some fundamental areas as a Junior DBA are: relational theory, T-SQL,and DBA tasks

having exposure to T-SQL will always be good for a DBA.
