I've been employed as a Network Admin for about 9 years and have SQL 2000 certs. I want to brush up on SQL administration (I'm rusty) and become a database admin. My goal is to have a new job as said database admin within a year. Which version of SQL Server should I certify in, 2008 or 2012? I have LOTS on training tools for SQL Server 2005...will that stuff be of any use in passing any of the tests for the newer versions? |

I would say current scenario sql 2012 would be better. Because going for sql 2008 now would still require you to upgrade them at a later point------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------SQL Server MVPhttp://visakhm.blogspot.com/ |

The material you know from SQL Server 2005 , will help greatly in progressing with the certification. Even though there are changes, many of the concepts remain the sameJack Vamvas--------------------http://www.sqlserver-dba.com |

Thanks guys, very helpful. I'm going to start by getting the MCSA: SQL Server 2012. Currently studying for the 70-462 test, other two tests soon after. After I achieve this, I will go for the MCSE. I have some SQL and a lot of networking experience but I don't want to get in over my head, so after my MCSA, is it advisable to only seek junior DBA positions for the time being? How proficient should I be as a DBA after merely the MCSA?Thanks! |

As well as the certification , focus on getting as much hands on experience - which is critical. Aim to get a job working with some experienced DBAs. Some fundamental areas as a Junior DBA are: relational theory, T-SQL,and DBA tasksJack Vamvas--------------------http://www.sqlserver-dba.com |

having exposure to T-SQL will always be good for a DBA. |
