Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) on SQL Server 2008/2012 Enterprise Edition and above allows you to encrypt your database without changing your applications - a really cool feature. Extensible Key Management (EKM) allows you to get your encryption keys off of your SQL Server and onto an encryption key management HSM (a security best practice). Otherwise you are essentially leaving your house keys taped to your front door. My company sells an Encryption Key Management HSM and can help you with any questions that you might have.Hear are some additional resources to help you out with your research.
