Is it just not in "synchronized" status? Or is it "disconnected" or "suspended"?

If mirroring actually broke, check the SQL Server error logs, filter by "mirror" and you should find messages showing when the mirror broke.

Did you have a witness set up? Did the mirror fail over, or just did it just stop?

Did you set up mirror monitoring? If you ran sp_dbmmonitoraddmonitoring then you can run sp_dbmmonitorresults and check the synchronization status and pinpoint out-of-sync more easily. You can also add alerts in SQL Agent to notify you when mirror status changes.
