I have 2 win 7 pcs, and a vista pc. One of the 7's has SQL 2008 express. I have verified remote connections are allowed and tcp, et al. are enabled. I have verified all ports and firewall items have been set based on quite a few Bing searches. I still get "cannot connect: a network related or instance specific error occurred..." when trying to connect an app from one box to the sql box.

What am I missing?

1) Can you verify you can connect from the server with the SQL Server installed?
2) what server reference do you use when you connect?
3) Confirm you can ping from the other server
4) Is TCP\IP enabled on the SQL Server?
5)Is it a named or default instance?
