1. create an excel (Book1.xlsm) with marco(msgbox("abc"), me.close() at workbook_Open.
2. place the excel at C:2. Enable xp_cmdshell in MSSQL 2008
3. run query exec xp_cmdshell 'C:\Book1.xlsm'

Result
1. EXCEL services start in task manager.
2. Nothing show up and the session&processes running non stop unless you stop the EXCEL services in task manager.

Any ideas?

Try opening a command window and running the command manually.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
SSIS can be used in a similar way.
