Hi,

Someone please help me figure this out.

On my reporting server, I noticed one of the drive's free space down to 2.83 GB today from 8.83 GB two days ago.

This is a 40 GB drive where weekly backup files reside. however, last fullbackup was from 3/5/13, so no new one added between this two dates.

Used space = 37.1 GB, but my data folder is only 31 GB.

I saw a System Volumn Information folder with yesterday's date as date modified. However, its size is 0 in its property.

And the only other foler is $recycle.bin of 23 MB.

I am in the process of getting some help from out network team but am curious to find it out on my own.

Oh, this is a VM server running win server 2008 R2 datacenter SP1.

Thanks!

Is your log on this drive?

No, both the data and tlog are on another drive.

And the system admin took a brief look, said you might have a phantom space somewhere, and added 40 GB to the drive.

But I don't like the idea of not knowing what ate up the space.

Is the paging file on that drive, and is it dynamically managed? Did you do any software installs that created a restore point?

Check online for TreeSize, SpaceSniffer, and similar utilities that show you the size of folders on disk, you should be able to find a sneaky large file if it's out there.
