Support WebCast: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP 3a: What It Is, Why It Is, and Whether to Upgrade

Our MS rep is still trying to determine if sp3a is in fact the re-release of sp3. She sent us the above link because she thought it might be helpful.

I am listening to this webcast right now. At the start of the webcast, Max Myrick, one of the presenters, said that service pack 3a is the re-release of service pack 3. I am mentioning it because I had wondered if that were true and had asked our MS representative if it were true but hadn't been able to find out the answer. A couple of people had asked me if I had found out the answer and I hadn't until now.

Thanks Tara,

Don't know if you have time, but any summary of the webcast would be great reading. Maybe MS has a link?

Just go to the above link and download the powerpoint presentation. It has some information but pretty much most of the information came from the presenters. They said in less than three weeks that a written transcript of the webcast would be available.

Most of the information was about MSDE, which I wasn't interested in. One thing that was important is that SELECT @@VERSION will show the same version number for service pack 3 and service pack 3a. To find out which one you have, you have to look at the registry:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\<instance name>\CurrentVersion\CSDversion

Also, MS repeatedly mentioned that if you already have service pack 3 installed and are not experiencing any problems, then just stick with service pack 3. They said for any new installations to use service pack 3a. Also, if you were experiencing problems with service pack 3 to install 3a.

What was the problem with sp3 that made them release sp3a anyways? I never experienced any problems with my sp3 installations...

From the powerpoint presentation:

814572 MDAC timing service
814410 memory leak
814130 securing network for local data stores

Also, a few people encountered Enterprise Manager problems (it would completely lock up) when creating DTS packages that had a destination source as a text file. Although I am not sure if this was really a problem with service pack 3 or not and if it was fixed in 3a.

There were other things mentioned that they changed with 3a, but I can't recall what they were. Will have to wait for the written transcript.
