I am trying to setup a Maintenance Plan for a SQL Server 2012 instance.

I go to Management Studio and expand the Management tree and don't see the Maintenance Plans option. I noted from an MSDN page

that in order to see those options one must be a member of the SYSADMIN server role. I was able to grant myself rights under my login (windows authentication) to be a member of the SYSADMIN role.

I am still unable to see the Maintenance Plans under the Management tree. Am I missing something obvious? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Have you tried disconnecting and reconnecting after you changed your rights? Alternately, close Management Studio and re-open.

What Edition of SQL Server are you running? What Edition of the tools are you running?

Management Studio: 11.0.3000.0
OS: 6.0.6002
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP1) - 11.0.3000.0 (X64)

Does it have to do with the fact that it is express edition?

Yep, it is because it is Express. What a bummer. I will have to automate the backups with scripts and a scheduler. Thank you for the responses. I appreciate the time you took to write back.
