Sorry, need to rant a bit.[rant]Been looking for a SQL developer with some reporting experience and the CVs I have seen so far generally look pretty good, so we get the person in for an interview and they turn out to be next to useless, what the hell is all that about? Did you seriously think we wouldn't give you another technical test, this time where you can't just google the answers? Please stop wasting my time and yours, I am snowed under as it is, without having to take time out of my day to interview morons![/rant]Anyhoo, anyone else get this type of rage?Btw, I am a contractor, I shouldn't be doing this shit..Anyone around Surrey in the UK who can actually write T-SQL, please take me out of my misery. I wouldn't mind if it was a very junior position, but its not and the pay reflects that! |

I'm not sure what CV stands for, but I would suggest screening them over the phone first before bringing them in for an interview. You will weed out most of these people! Sometimes though it seems like the person you are interviewing in person is different than the person you interviewed on the phone. You wonder if they had a friend do the phone interview for them as they know less in person than they did on the phone!Tara KizerSQL Server MVP since 2007http://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |

I have started doing this as it is just taking up too much of my time. The one I interviewed earlier was a telephone interview and I could hear him typing the questions I was asking him, so decided to make it harder for him, it was painful enough waiting for his internet to catch up anyway, so threw him a curve ball and made it too difficult for him to look it up in google. At least it saved about 20-30 minutes of painfully sitting in a face to face I suppose, but when his CV ( Curriculum Vitae ) said he had 10+ years of experience, it was still just embarrassing and a waste of my time.It just gets me how many people lie so badly about their experience, its a £50k+ pa job (a fairly good wage here in the UK). |

Some people tend to over write their curriculum vitae. Although some could not deliver based on the qualifications they wrote in their cv's, there are also others who are honest but cannot answer properly during interviews. |

During interviews I like asking questions that focus on problem solving - or approaches to common emergency situations. Rather than focusing on definitions of commands etc. It may not be a foolproof menthos - but usually someone with experience can elaborate on the approachesJack Vamvas--------------------http://www.sqlserver-dba.com |
