| Hi all,I used Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Management Studio before. Now I have Microsoft SQL 2012 installed in the network of my office: Download Microsoft SQL Server Compact; Import and Export (32-bit); Import and Export (64-bit); SQL Server Data Tools; SQL Server Management Studio; Configuration Tools; Documentation & Community; Integration Services. I have 2 books: (1) Introducing Microsoft SQL Server 2012 by Ross Mistry and Stacia Misner, and (2) Microsoft SQL Server 2012 by Patrick LeBlanc. I don't know how to get Microsoft SQL Server 2012 started? My goal is to use Microsoft SQL Server 2012 with ArcGIS version 10.2.2. I saw Spatial Data Features Supported in SQL Server on Page 86 of Book (1). I am lost in getting this thing started. Please kindly help and advise. Thanks in advance,Scott Chang |

| Hi Tara Kizer and khtan, Thanks for your responses.This morning, I came to realize that Microsoft SQL Server 2012 can be used in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (version 2012) and Micrsoft Visual (version 2012 or 2010), after I read the Book (2) closely that has (i) Using SQL Server Management Studio to create solutions and projects on Page 26, (ii) Using SQL Server data tools on Page 27, and (iii) Using SQL Server Configuration Manager on Page 30. I think I have to get my Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (version 2012) started and try to reach the place of Spatial Data Features Support in SQL Server (listed on Page 86 of Book (1)). I believe this is a right direction for me to start in using Microsoft SQL Server 2012. Do you agree with me in this matter of getting Microsoft SQL Server 2012 started? Please comment and respond again.Thanks,Scott Chang |

Management Stduio is just a GUI tool. You need to have the database engine installed, and you'll need to use an edition that supports spatial data as khtan mentioned. Express edition is a start, but you might need developer edition. I have no idea about the book you are reading. I don't read books for the most part. I learn by doing instead.
