Hi, I would like to know how to register a new server which is outside our network using IP address. I put IP address in the add server list but it gave me a general network error. Is it because I don't have permissions or I am not doing the right way. Also how safe is it do such thing? Thanks,Sarat.**To be intoxicated is to feel sophisticated, but not be able to say it.**

Hi Sarat! Most corporate SQL Servers are protected by firewalls and are not reachable from outside their particular network "zone" due to blocking of TCP port 1433.I would not advice anyone to open port 1433 from the internet or any other insecure network to their SQL Server. It's better to find another means of connecting to it (VPN, browser QA-like tool, terminal services etc.)

I thought so! I only applied slammer worm patch (blckg port 1433), sp3a etc. Do you think telnet is a good idea?**To be intoxicated is to feel sophisticated, but not be able to say it.**

I suggest creating an alias on your machine using the Client Network Utility. The alias would point to the IP address and port number. Port 1433 should not be used on the SQL Server even if you have the slammer worm patch installed. 1434 should also not be used. Pick another port to use and then setup a firewall rule for it.Tara
