Dave writes "I have SQL Server 2000 SP3a on a Win 2K SP4 machine. I made two server groups in Enterprise Manager, "Development" and "Production". I just moved from SP2 to SP3a and all the servers in my "Production" group have unregistered. I put them back in (several times) and rebooted (several times) but for some reason I keep losing them as soon as I leave Enterprise Manager and come back in. I have two in my "Development" group that stay with no problem. One is the local machine and the other is on the LAN. All the machines that won't stay registered in the "Production" group are also on the same LAN.

I did not have this problem when I was on SQL Server 2000 SP2 and Win 2K SP2. It all started when I upgraded the service packs.

Any ideas?

Is this one hard enough for you? ;-)

Thanks,

Dave"

It sounds like you have something wrong with your box. I would suggest reinstalling SQL Server Client Tools, then apply service pack 3a for SQL Server to your client machine.

Additional Information:

It looks like this is related to the Win2k SP4 upgrade. I restored my machine from a ghost image made prior to the SQL SP3a and Win2k SP4 upgrades. I applied SQL SP3a and did some testing. There was no problem with the SQL Servers staying registered in their server groups. Once I applied Win2k SP4, the problem returned.

OK, so now I know the cause, but what's the cure?

I can not find any related information about this. I found that this is a problem with Windows XP, but I can't find any information related to Windows 2000.

The fix would be not to apply service pack 4 unless they have a bug fix for this. I would contact Microsoft to see if they have an undocumented fix for this. If the problem is found to be a bug, the MS call is free.
