Hi All,

If my database server, unexpectedly goes down, is there any way to shift the control automatically from database server to backup server in SQL Server?

Thanx in advance.

Yes

It's called clustering.
You need two copies of SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition, two servers and a shared drive array.
Do a search on this site and on www.sql-server-performance.com for some good articles.

You don't just need any 2 old servers, they must be supported on the Clustering HCL.

Depending on your availability needs you could also use log shipping but with the catch that you may have a interval 10 minutes where you are down and the last transaction log is still sitting on your dead server or not depending on your raid setup and severity of hardware failure.

I am using SQL Server 7, so cant apply Log shipping. And How feasible is SQL 7 clustering on Win2K box?

Thanx in advance.

It is possible but not fun. Do some research at Microsoft.com (hey, there's a novel idea) for some good articles on it.

The problem with this configuration is that it's quite fiddly to set up. Some things have to be done in exactly the right sequence or you end up with a machine that won't even boot.
If you are serious about a cluster, upgrading to 2000 will save you a lot of hassle.

SQL7 doesn't have a built-in logshipping mechanism, but you can VERY easily build your own.

We actually use clustering and log shipping. We use clustering so that we can afford a failure at our main site. We use log shipping for disaster recovery purposes, so we've got another site located in another state that we log ship our databases to.

And the 7.0 Resource Kit has tools for setting up Log Shipping for SQL 7.0.
