eric writes "Is there any utility to check for errors before converting .mdf files to and from MSDE 2000, SQL Server 7, and SQL Server 2000? I know that there are some small variations between the 3 database formats and do not know how to check for version incompatibilies myself.

Thanks.

No, that is why you should run this on a test system first. You should not do this in production unless you have already successfully tested this in a test environment.

There aren't any version incompatibilities, so I'm not sure what you are referring to.

The only incompatibilities I can think of are some new reserverd words in 2000 that were not reserved in 7.0. However, there may be some other issues such as logins, jobs and DTS packages not being transferred. Also, indexes and statistics should be rebuilt/updated. I wrote an article on moving from 7.0 to 2000 you might want to review for other tidbits.

Well, incompatibilities will not exist when you initially upgrade since the database compatibility mode will not be set to 80. The incompatibilities will arise when you change it.
