I see a SQL Mail service in the section marked Supported Service in Enterprize Manager. How do I get this to run and if I do, does it mean I can send mail without install Outlook.
I am really looking for the easiest way to send mail to the operator when a job fails in SQL.

You'll still need an e-mail client on the server if you want to use SQL Mail:

There are other e-mail solutions though. Do a forum search and you'll find the various ways. I find that SQL Mail is easiest for what you are trying to do. And yes we have Outlook installed on our database servers, and it does not cause any problems.
