D writes "Im trying to estimate harware and software requirements for the following situation (again, many guestimates):Database = SQL Server 2000 SP3OS = Win2k3Size of database = 150 GigsQuery types = Rather basic. Mostly 100 to 1000 record detail reports, no roll ups, aggrates are pre-populated. Records are filtered on a numeric key. No views. This will be feeding an intranet app with around 1000 users. I am wrestling with whether or not I will need to get 1 or 2 SQL Server processor licenses. Would it be out of the question to operate on just one CPU?What kind of harware would you suggest for a 150 gig database? On the edge of my seat,D."

1000 users? Concurrent or not? With the basic information that you have given, I would say 2 CPUs at minimum (I might even suggest 4). 150GB for a database size is large. You will need lots of RAM for this. We've actually got a couple of DBs at that size that perform fine on a 2CPU with 2-4GB of RAM, but there is very little concurrent users happening.Tara

For 150GB's of data, you'll need a large and fast IO subsystem. You might want to take a look at EMC, IBM, or Hitatchi and get a SAN or Fibre attached storage box. Also, are you planning on clustering this box? For 1000 users, it sounds like you might need to do that.Michael<Yoda>Use the Search page you must. Find the answer you will.</Yoda>

You should focus on how many Procs to gety in the hardware. Whatever that number is, that is the number of licenses you need. If the box has 2 procs, you can't just get one license and say we won't let SQL use the other proc.-Chadhttp://www.clrsoft.comSoftware built for the Common Language Runtime.
