This is a really open ended question. we are currently looking into clustering our SQL database. We currently have log shipping going on but this was only a short term solution. can any one point me in the right direction to info on clustering, any information or advise will be appreciated.

Thanxs

This article here http://www.sqlteam.com/item.asp?ItemID=5137 is about SQL 7, but the collection of links is still good. Particularly Brad's articles at www.sql-server-performance.com
There is some good stuff in Book Online, and some really handy KB articles at Microsoft.

That should get you started

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.

There was also an article in sqlmag a month or so ago with a step-by-step installation.

And remember to watch for the things that you may currently use and won't work using a cluster, such as xp_SendMail.

Haha!!

Actually, I've been skating at our company's quarterly meeting!!

OMB, depending on how much money you have to spend, you can buy a "cluster in a box" type setup from Dell, HP/Compaq etc. We recently purchased a Fibre Attach storage box from Dell / EMC (a CX200) and as a part of the installation Dell installed cluster services on our two servers, attached the CX200, and setup the drives as cluster resources. It didn't cost us too much money either. We had to provider two servers with Windows 2000 Adv server installed, and they did the rest. Depending on how much money you want to spend, they will go further and install SQL Server, migrate data, etc, etc, etc. The sky is the limit.

If you don't buy it as a package deal, make sure that all of your drivers and software are "cluster aware" like your tape backup drivers and software. Plan on spending a good bit of time setting it up and testing it the first time. This is NOT going to be a weekend project.

If you have any further questions, come back here. I'm sure someone can help ya out or point you in the right direction.

Michael

xp_sendmail works fine on a cluster. We have it running on 3 different SQL clusters without too much trouble.

REad this note for details on how to configure it in a failover cluster environment http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;298723

Sam Roller Skating
We are in Mobile Alabama, there's no ice skating here :)

I've not been skating in FOREVER!! It was fun though. Our company always seems to do fun stuff.

I used to roller skate a lot too. Quads, not inlines. Sounds like fun.

Thanks eyechart, I haven't tried it myself I was just quoting Microsoft. Even in the Article you point to it states:

MORE INFORMATION
SQL Mail is not fully supportable when used on a SQL Server failover cluster due to the MAPI limitation of not being cluster-aware.

For alerting functions, use another monitoring tool such as System Monitor that is running on another computer.

We've got SQL Mail configured in our clustered environment. It works most of the time. MS says that we would get more reliability from it if we used an Exchange server. We're currently using Internet mail in that environment. They say that the Exchange server is on its way, but they've been saying that forever. We rely on SQL Mail on a different non-clustered server that uses Exchange server when we've got important e-mail work to do on the SQL Server. MS will do a best effort support on the SQL Mail configuration in a clustered environment. Best effort apparently means referring you to that Q article. As if I hadn't seen it yet.
