Joe writes "When installing SQL Server 7.0 Desktop, I get the following:

setup is installing Microsoft data access components (MDAC)...
REGSVR: Unable to load 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\SystemOLE DB\msdatt.dll':
31: A device attached to the system is not functioning.

I only have a zip drive and modem attached and both are
working properly. Also the file 'msdatt.dll' is present.

The ultimate result is that when opening the Northwind database
SQL will not let me view the contents."

Joe-
the "31" error sounds like an old school DOS error. I would suspect something is wrong on the hardware side w/ your c: volume. Is that folder mounted to another physical drive, and have you run CHKDSK and verified the physical volume is OK?
