an uninstallation wouldn't delete the MDF and LDF files, would it?

couldn't you just put those somewhere safe, reinstall, and re-attach?

Yeah, and that is what I did to get it back up. It was the initial freak out when I realized I removed the wrong instance and immediately had people start to come up to me.

I think the answer is that the network has been updated to protect against the mydoom virus and it takes the wins server a bit of time to clear it's cache.
