I mean how do we find it. after that how do we approach in general,like the steps we do follow to improve the performance of a query.

You have run profiler and watch which queries are running for long time.

What's your definition of long running query? Once you get them with profiler, you can look at query's execution plan and ensure sql uses proper index.
