I have a basic doubt
I have sql server 2005 enterprise edition on windows server 2003.
I have 32 gb of memory.
by default how much memory will be taken by sql server
I think we need to enable AWE switch. Is it correct

64-bit or 32-bit?

By default, SQL will use as much memory as it needs.

You've been given the 32-bit answer in your other post. For 64-bit, the AWE option does not need to be enabled.

Thanks for the reply.
If it uses as much memory as it needs then why these AWE option and 3gb ,PAE switches. Is there any need to enable these options

you have to enable lock pages in memory and enable AWE ,so you can get more memory in 32-bit system. Remember if you have other instance running or other applications are running then you have to set max memory for SQL server so other can get memory as they want.

Yes because 32-bit OS can only address 4gb directly. PAE let 32-bit os address more than 4gb by address mapping, and awe let sql uses memory above 4gb range. By default, user mode apps can only use lower 2gb memory. Switch 3gb let certain user mode apps like sql server to use 1gb memory in upper 2gb range.
