My 'sa' account is locked out and the BUILTIN\Administrators account does not have the sysadmin role. I removed the sysadmin role from BUILTIN\Administrators for security reasons and before I could create a new account with the sysadmin role I fat fingered the sa password and locked it out. How can I get myself out of this mess.

Any help would be welcomed.

SA account is not a Windows account.
How can that account be "locked out"?

You can alter the SQL Server to accept "mixed mode" of authentication. Then SA can log in again.

Is your server in Windows Authontication? It has to be on Mixed mode then you could use both SQL(SA) and Windows a/c.

I think he meant he has changed the SA password and couldn't remember it anymore since it was an accident.

If you removed the builtin account and have not added the service account in your login, try looking into using DAC instead. Assuming you didn't remove the network default account as well.

Or better, add yourself into the other default groups on the sql server when you first installed (if you haven't removed them as well)

This is sql 2005, it is in mixed mode. The problem is I removed the sysadmin role from BUILTIN\Administrators for security reasons and before I could create a new account with the sysadmin role I fat fingered the sa password and locked it out.

To change authentication mode, see http://weblogs.sqlteam.com/peterl/archive/2008/06/19/How-to-change-authentication-mode-in-SQL-Server.aspx

>> What is DAC?

Dedicated admin connection, books online tells you how to connect to sql with it.
