I have a file server and Databases in two different locations. One location is the exact replica of the other. Right now replication is done using some of-the-shelf software but I was looking if there exists some technique to synchronize the database without using any tools.

Have anyone come accross any research papers in this area or have implemented any such techniques.

You could try SAN mirroring/replication, database mirroring, log shipping, ...

But I don't know what you mean by "without using any tools". You have to set something up in order for it to send the data. There's no magic here.

I think she meant third-party tools.

Tara, I have heard about SAN mirroring for Cluster in two different location. Do you know how good and expensive is it?

Shreya,
If you want real-time synchronization(Automatic) ,you should go for Database mirroring or Clustering and Transaction rep,log shipping for warm standy.

It's very good and very, very expensive. We were quoted in the 7 figures.

Thanks for the reply,

Rather than tools I was looking into techniques and protocols for Data replication and synchronization. we just wanted to see if it would be feasible to go for inhouse development or implement some third party tools.

If you have any tried sth similar please tell me about it.

I don't see why you'd want to write your own, when you could use what was already suggested here or replication.

I want to make each server independent yet synchronized. By independent i mean there should not be any master/slave relation between the databases. I mean changes can take place in any database and that should be reflected in both.

You could use two-way transactional replication or merge replication.

Take a look at Peer-to-Peer to replication.

Tara, I have heard that SAN replication is too much expansive then the Litespeed Logshiping.

SAN = $13.58/GB of usable storage per year
EFS/NAS Tier = $17.95/GB of usable storage per year
And also SAN Replication need 3SAN if you wanted to replicate data from one(Source) to other(Target).

I'm not saying to use SAN replication. I'm saying it's a possibility.
