What access to a SQL Server instance does MOM require to be able to monitor it? Does it have to have sysadmin access? Does anyone have a link to a guideline?

Yes, I tried Google, but no luck so far.

I believe it needs local admin/sysadmin. MOM uses the Event log heavily to check for issues. I believe reading the Event log requires very elevated permissions. MOM also can gather PerfMon data and perf data within SQL Server such as blocked processes.

I do not have a link, but rather I'm looking at our production environment.

It does, however I've never used it. We've got a MOM team here, so they adminster it although we work closely together with them. To get to the documentation, I got into the Admin console and selected Help/Help Topics from the menu bar.

The only infomation I have been able to find so far on access requirements are gems like this:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc181044(TechNet.10).aspx
"Configuration
Client monitoring of remote connectivity is configured by:
Installing either SQL Server or SQL Server client tools on the designated client computers.
Installing a MOM agent on the designated client computers. Add the designated client computers to the same configuration group that you are using to monitor remote connectivity.
Adding designated client computers to the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Client Side Monitoring computer group.
Ensuring that the MOM service account on the designated client computer has the appropriate permissions to connect to the SQL Server computers."

A little short of the details about what permissions are required.

MOM has doc on permission required. If you don't use MOM to start/stop services, MOM doesn't need sysadmin rights.

Do you have a link to the doc on the permissions required?

Try search 'Microsoft SQL Server Management Pack Guide - Microsoft SQL Server Management Pack for Microsoft Operations Manager 2005' in Microsoft, I don't have link on hand.
