I would like to see how certain databases perform under 2005 while receiving a similar load to what they received under 2000. Can you use profiler or something similar to simulate that load on the new db? Like capturing a trace and then running it against the 2005 db.

You could move the db to a SQL Server 2005 instance (leave it in 2000 compatibility) and test .

how to test is the main thing, without pointing an app at it that would be similar queries.

You have to understand how 90 compatibility will react to your apps.

Here is one:http://blogs.msdn.com/gertd/archive/2008/02/16/database-compatibility-level.aspx

Simulating never give you real load on the server. Possible to run app in parallel on both sql2k and sql2k5?
