New to this forum and indeed SQL2005
I hyave searched the forum but I could not find this topic being addressed.

I have a SQL db which is used for an Infra Enterprise implementation.
I have set up log Shipping on this primary server to ship logs to a secondary server using SQL server management studio 2005 for manual failover if required.

I have read elsewhere that transaction log shipping interferes with doing backups or backups interfere with tranaction log shipping. Is this true. I would like to schedule a complete backup of the database at least once a day as well as transaction log shipping every 15 minutes. When I go to do a backup with management studio it only gives me the option to do a .trn backup.
Is there a way of doing this without scripting, not having any scripting experience at all.

Sorry if this has been asked before but I have searched the forum and not found this out explicitly.

While you setup Log shipping ,you can indicate you often you want to do Transaction log backup. Doing manually will interfere LSN of traan log backup so it will fail. Yes You can schedule full backup every night if database is small.

Thanks for the reply.

The db is set to log ship every 15 minutes. It is quite small 1GB at the minute but will increase quite quickly as it is rolled out to many more customers.

How do I schedule the backup job through SQL Server Management Studio so that it does not interfere with the log shipping?

When you go to properties of database, you can see log shipping. You can schedule from there. You can schedule full backup during night time.

Full backup will not affect log shipping.

check how you want your maintenance plan to be setup.
Keep a note of your transaction log backup and check to see they dont interfere with the Full Database backups, as it might do nothing else then slow the backup down, as it locks the objects. but that should be a once nightly process, so Just work around that and do now trans backups during your DB full backup.

Sorry if I come across as being stupid but what I have done is to set up log shipping every 15 starting at the hour to a second server and then schedule a full back up at 00:05 to the local disk. I will then get this local backup file backed up to tape.

I take it this scenario is secure and the backup job does not interfere with the log shipping, barring possibly slowing it down?

No if full backup can finish in 10 minutes.

Transaction log shipping takes about 15 seconds and the full backup takes about 30 seconds according to the logs. I will just have to keep an eye on it and make sure they do not overlap.

The only reason you won't want them to over lap is so you can restore the backup then apply the logs after the backup.

If you pause log shipping then take your backup then restart log shipping you can apply the full backup followed by the next log to recover from a failure.

You can do that without pausing log shipping.

Hi,
I am new to this site. I need help on the following. I am trying to setup log shipping using two named instances on a single server. What should I enter for "Netowork path to backup folder"? It does not take something like "c:\logs" - it has to be in network folder format \\servername\folder - this is a mandatory field. I thought I can just skip this and enter the local folder only since it is on the same machine. But it does not allow me to skip this field. Please help.

Thanks,
Satya
