Hello

Back again, after a week of trouble-shooting and hardware replacement, and the server is still going through the "unexpected system shutdown" when a particular table is accesed via a Select query or if the index is rebuilt.

This seems very odd to me, but the only think I can think of is that there something about the table or data that is exposing some problem with the system (memory, hardware, etc.).

This is a Dell machine with 4GB RAM and 2 Harddrives (one about 160GB 10KRPM and the other 750GB 7.2K RPM). The OS is Windows Server 2003 64bit and the SQL Server is 2005 Enterprise 64bit.

I have run enough diagnostics on the machine, but none of the tests (hard drive, memory, system) have every indicated an error. We have had Dell out to replace the Power Supply, Fans and Motherboard.

The table has only 25 million rows and I just partitioned it last week (by year) into separate FileGroups on the larger drive.

At this point, I am considering creating a new copy of the table and leaving the old one (renaming it) and change all the sprocs, etc. to use this new version and see if that makes a difference.

If anyone has any other thoughts or suggestions, they would be welcome.

Have you opened a case with Microsoft yet? Honestly, they'll be able to not only help you but faster than us. They've got loads of tools to track these types of issues down.

I open 5-10 cases with Microsoft per year. There are some things that just can't be solved over the Internet, such as your issue.

I haven't opened the case with MS yet because I was trying to isolate the cause or what appears to occur before the system crashes.

But at this point it sounds like that is the way to go.

Thanks for the suggestion.
