I want to start mornitoring my database for efficiency, availability and perfomance optmization. I need a guidiance from the basics how I am to do it.

You can use idera tools for monitoring. I use the Operations manager 2007 but I think this couldn't help you enough if its only for one database. For performance tunning you can use this solution which is really good actually. http://blog.ola.hallengren.com/blog/_archives/2008/1/1/3440068.html
