Hi all. I, like many others before me, find myself needing to resize my tempdb.mdf and templog.ldf. I've looked thru [urlhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/307487[/url]and I'm wondering, is there any risk of completely screwing up my sql server? Obviously I'll take a backup of the server prior to doing anything, but has anyone ever run into any problems with this operation? What sort of problems? What could have been done to prevent problems? I am down to 600 MB free on the drive housing this, and it's my OS drive (I didn't install it). Can I move the location of these two files safely without breaking my other databases? As you can no doubt guess I am not too experienced in using SQL.Thanks |

Well, I wouldn't shrink as it has grow again. Restarting SQL Services will create fresh Tempdb.Or if you are planning to move Tempdb to Larger drive than current one then use this approach:http://www.sqlteam.com/article/moving-the-tempdb-database |

I haven't actually tried following the KB article yet. I thought I had read something somewhere that said it could cause problems. So restarting the services will simply remove my 4 GB tempdb and create a new one? |

Yes sir. It will reset to default. Make sure nothing is using it and you can do in offline hours. This is just short-term solutions. You need to find what is causing it to grow but 4GB is not a big file. |

Great, thanks. I haven't reset the server since October judging by the modification date on the templog.ldf. That sounds about right to me. The problem is this file rests on the OS drive which is about 12GB overall size. It's an older server due for replacement within the year. I'll just plan on restarting after my backup tonight when nothing is using it.Thanks again. |
